How do I replace lawn with plants that can use foot traffic?

Our lawn is covered with weeds, Bermuda grass and bare spots. We'd like to replace it with drought resistant plants that can take foot traffic.
If it were me, since it is small, I would start over. But since you just moved in and have other projects going on, just try to reclaim it this year and see what happens.

Hi, Sherrie,
Don't work your lawn when it's very wet, or you'll unnecessarily compact the soil, negatively affecting drainage. If it's a small yard, wait until this Spring to see if you want to completely kill off existing weeds and grass, till soil, rake, and reseed.
If you prefer, try attaching your garden hose to the liquid form of Weed B Gon, which won't harm your grass.
Remember that grass blends are better able to withstand a varierty of conditions
(children, pets, excessive rain, drought, etc.). You could contact a nursery in your area for more dpecific advice.
