What is your location and lighting?
Without knowing anything about where you live and what your yard looks like, I suggest that you go to a local nursery and see what they are selling since they stock what grows in their region. You want to buy perennials since they are plants that come back each year. But you should ask about size, watering requirements, shade vs. full sun, etc. at the garden center. They are a huge help!
Some of the most beautiful flowers for springtime are tulips. You plant the bulbs between Sept. and Dec . depending on where you live and they come back every year. They don't last very long but their beauty for that short time is worth it. There are several perennials to chose from and great books on
gardening at the library to help get you started. Roses are another great choice, a lot depends on where you live, your soil, how much sun your plants will receive and you. It's so much fun once you get started you will keep adding more and more flowers. Hope this helps
There are a wonderful variety of annuals to choose from. I am particularly fond of irises for their bloom and wonderful fragrance. There are several different lilies to choose from and they will multiply so 1 or 2 bulbs will turn into many plants that can then be divided and planted other places. Lily of the Valley and peonies will bloom for you every year. The lily of the valley will need to be planted someplace where it can be contained or it will take over!
Look for the Hardy Plant Society for your area. You will find friends willing to help.
See anything at the nursery marked perrenial will come back if it lives. Feed and water it as per the instructions. Start with one kind and learn how to raise it well, then do your homework and find another and how to care for it, add a new type each yr. Roses, Bulb flowers, poppies, and many more are perennial. Keep in mind, perennials usually do not bloom as long as annuals, except roses. They often bloom all summer.
