What to do about part of my backyard becomes a river when it rains

Our yard is fenced and everytime it rains there are literally mini rivers running through it! The rain comes from the property next door and all brush and leaves fill up but when it rains all water comes through my property. We cannot afford to add truckloads of dirt to raise its level and then have to raise all of our fencing. Any help??

Is the water coming from off of your house or from near by properties? If it is coming from off of your house a French Drain would help. If from other properties - you might need to visit with your city's planning depart.

I live on a hill from south to north and from west to east. Each spring the run off from melting snow runs through every ones back yard until it reaches level ground. We have the south to north hill tiered three times with lowest to the north that the house sits on, The water runs about three feet away from where the second tier starts up. It runs behind our garage and straight to the back of the neighbors yard. We leave the mini channel alone each year and just make sure that it doesn't get blocked by moving soil or leaves to back the water up into the yard. At least it is a good distance away from the house, so we have never had problems with water in the house. We were thinking about putting in gravel and pavers in a V channel, but were afraid it would fill up with soil and leaves anyway, so we figured we would leave it alone for now.

can you ditch or swale along the fence to steer the flow in a better direction?

  • Install a French drain and have the county surveyor out. I would take photos or video for every rain even to document your case.
