First make sure the yard is properly graded. Plan on bringing in truckloads of soil, as construction sites are notorious for leaving construction debris behind.
Hire a landscape designer or architect if you have trouble pulling a plan together that makes you happy.
Is the land flat or do you plan to terrace it or put in retaining walls? Do you want to pour a cement patio, sidewalk or stairs? Do you have to put a lawn in? What about a fence? Garden area?
I would start with pencil and paper... Sketch out what you want or the ideas you have and then begin at the front of the house where you get the most traffic. Normally the front yard first and work your way around the back.
