We dont have skunks in australia, but suggest employing Peppi Le Pew as he seems to have good success in keeping them at bay
You could mount trellis around it and sink the trellis 6 inches into the soil.
Make sure all areas where they can enter are covered. Heavens...you don't want one to get under there and die! That happened to my Aunt and it was awful! Good luck.
Could you use a wire fencing, like chicken wire to keep them out? It could be painted black to make it less noticeable.
Trap and relocate them or they will find a way to get to your bird feeder or dog food. removing attractants is the first step. Place a live trap in a heavy-duty garbage bag and when you catch one put the whole mess in another garbage bag, relocate to a wooded area, close to a brushpile and hope that it isn't mad at you.
