Without seeing a photo of the snake, it is impossible to know if it would be a cottonmouth, also known as a water moccasin , or a common rat snake. Rat snakes will slither for the safety of the weeds of bushes, while cottonmouths are aggressive and have been known to chase people. Your best defense against any kind of snake is to keep grass short, leaves raked, and shrubs well trimmed with a six inch clearance from the ground. If you use a mulch, use a light colored one, or you could put down landscape fabric, and put white marble chips on top of that. Using brown or black mulch offers excellent camouflage for snakes. This advise will NOT guarantee you will not have snakes, but it might help encourage them to find a more suitable environment.
I installed "snake fencing" - and depending what part of the country you live in the installation may be different. I had it done for rattlesnakes, as I have a bunch of pets and need the backyard safe for the pets. Google and see what it says for your area. Gotta keep the kids safe!
