Give them a "sand box" in a shady area. They dig from boredom and to find cool earth. I left one area for my dogs to dig. To start, I kept it slightly moist. They eventually realized this was a wonderful place for a nap. The other option, their own sand box. Build a box and fill with sand or sand and dirt mix. Put toys and treats on top and a few in the dirt. They will start to go there to hunt for chewies. It will take some time but it works. Yes, cats will leave "treats" but the dogs love gross things.
Take them for walks to expel some energy..
