How do you keep squirrels from gnawing on plastic garden/patio items?

We have lots of squirrels in our neighborhood. They're fun to watch, but they gnaw on everything that's hard plastic. We just bought a cantilever umbrella with a large, heavy plastic base. How can we protect it from these critters?
