I've used granulated garlic this summer. Sprinkle it around the base of your flowers and about 6 inches out from the base. Cover the area and refresh as you see it needs it. The 6 inches out (from stem to 6 inches out) will deter squirrels from digging to the roots of plant to eat the roots. It's working well for me.
