Oh Mdunderdale! You poor soul! Bamboo is one of the hardest things to get rid of because it spreads undergroun through rhizomes and you never know WHERE it will pop up next (just like poison ivy does). Here is a link about how to it but it is hard work, and costly, almost to the point of being prohibitive :( Good Luck to you. Thanks for coming to Hometalk for an answer.

    Hi Mdunderdale,

Sadly bamboo is notoriously difficult to get rid of. It is considered an invasive plant which basically means you have to get rid of or kill/starve every single root from the plant. :( Watch the video below for a few ideas to see if that helps. Another idea I've read, depending on where it is located is to constantly cut of every tiny piece of the plant that gets above the dirt. It will take a long time, however eventually the plant will die due to lack of sun. The hard part here is paying attention to it every day and chopping off any part of the plant that come through. One more idea I've read is to build an underground barrier so that the roots can't spread. It must be very deep because bamboo roots will work hard to spread. :( Wishing you the best. BTW, this video has an ad first - that's not the answer. LOL ;0

Eliminating bamboo plants starts with a shovel. The creeping rhizomes and roots of bamboo are virtually immune to the herbicides people normally use on unwanted plants. In order to start to get rid of bamboo, you must physically dig up the offending clump. Make sure you remove as much of the roots as possible.

Any new shots that come up cut off and paint full strength Round Up on the fresh cut.

Hi, we had a large patch of bamboo at the bottom of our garden and tried all kinds of things. The best way to get rid of it is to dig it up, but it's hard work. You can also cut it down and pour boiling water over the freshly cut stalks. Just be careful, the boiling water will kill other little plants that are in the splash zone and you will probably need to repeat if you see new shoots popping up.

  • You need to dig up all the rhizomes. It's a lot of work since bamboo is an invasive plant.
