When can I dig them up and try to plant elsewhere?

  • How lucky are you! It depends on your climate. If you have lots of summer rain, you could safely transplant them now. If you live where I do, with no rain whatsoever and temps 100°+ daily, I would wait until fall.

Hi Debbie. Wait until they start to turn this Fall. Then cut back the plants while protecting the root systems. Then transplant the roots. Cover with cardboard before winter hits. You can hold the cardboard down with bricks, rocks, or even lawn clippings. Protecting the roots from the frost is important. Then next Spring, when there is no more threat of frost, remove the cardboard. Mother Nature should take over from there. Best wishes.

Planting strawberries on the bare ground around other plants is an effective strategy in permaculture to have a beautiful and healthy garden. The strawberry plants have beautiful foliage, suppress weeds and its shallow roots do not interfere with other plantings.

easier to pull the runners as they develop....will decrease the invasion right away, and then you can just pull out the plants in the fall.
