What is the best way to kill and then prevent weeds in my gardens?

we have well established flower gardens but neither my husband or I are physically able to do a lot of weeding anymore. We would prefer not to use strong chemicals, but will if that's the only way to keep the weeds down. Have seen many home made formulas but haven't tried them. Any proven suggestions????

You cannot use weed killers,or the diy remedies with plants in the garden. The weeds can be smothered out with newspaper, cardboard, heavy landscape fabric and top with mulch. The only other process is ti use boiling water only on the weeds

In the spring sprinkle Preen around your flower beds.....it kills the weed seeds before they come up and that will help. Then do it again about the first week of July. Now you can't use if you are planting seeds but perennials plants it works great.....very few weeds will come up.

Check out earthbox.com for planting guides and care, there are some videos. And homemade earthboxes by Josh or you can buy them. Fertilize once, no weeding and plentiful veggies. I've been doing it for years and love it.

Even a caveman could do it :) :):)

Boiling water+ vinegar is a good chemical free option, just be sure to protect the surrounding plants from vinegar :)

I have found 'neighborhood children' and 'grandchildren' are great as "weeders" and they are learning at the same time and will love doing something for you ;)

Hi! You don't have to use preem, a chemical. Rather, use corn gluten you can find it at lawn supply stores. I used red rooster brand. Spring and fall applications. It prevents seeds from germinating. So, if you plant seed...it will also prevent that. And it fertilizes your beds too. You are probably going to have to weed your gardens first, unfortunately. Do you have an ample amt of mulch in your gardens? That helps. Try weeding after a rain, it's so much easier...I too am finding it more difficult as I get older..just when you start getting good at it...good luck.

i also invested ina kneeler pad that is u shaped with upright arms(that folds for storage) and that helps ALOT. You can flip it over and sit for a while as well. Mine is 9 yrs old so it's worth it.

try horticultural vinegar available at garden centers. it is much stonger than household vinegar, and kills weeds dead.
