I wish I knew. I have tried pellets and also little stakes that you stake in the ground that works with the sun. they were a little expensive and none has worked for me. My neighbor actually told me to pour human urine down the holes. I have not tried and don't plan to. I think the smell would be a problem. But she is our neighborhood wacko.

Please do not chase them to your neighbor. Where are you geographically? Are you SURE they are gophers? Possibly VOLES. Makes a difference.

Try shredding some Irish spring soap up and sprinkle it around your plants. It won't hurt the plants but the smell is so strong it will send rabbits, gophers and everything running. Rabbits were eating my hosta and after the Irish Spring, they left them alone.

If they are truly gophers and not voles or chipmonks you can take chicken side and put it around the plants about an inch under the soil. Then cover with mulch. I use rosemary to keep the deer away from my garden but don't know if it will work on gophers.
