Which is better for keeping mosquitoes away?

Need to explain first....
Since I now have 3 dogs & a cat, it's such a pain in the butt having to let them all out different times of the day. So what I do is leave the door to the screen porch open just enough for them to get in & out. The screen porch door leading outside is also open just enough for the CAT, because the dogs can push it to open enough for them to get out. However, this year we've had way more than normal, mosquitoes. So leaving the door open is not happening. And having to get up & stop what I'm doing every few minutes is a pain in the butt.
My question:
Which would deter the mosquitoes best? A few citronella candles burning when the mosquitoes are at their worse -OR- buying a few citronella plants to put around the doors? And, is citronella toxic to my animals?

Invest in an after market pet door for a sliding glass door if that is what you have. Or install one directly in the wall. I have 6 cats and 6 dogs - I would be nothing but a door person . . . Plus saves on a/c and heat!

We just rrecently purchased the Spartan Mosquio Eradicator.....unbelievabley successful. We live in a mosquito haven...this eradicator works!!!! We have tried everything else but nothing works like this one does. We paid 20.00 for the 2 pack, placed them in 2 places away from the house, followed the simple instructions and we are 98% mosquito free. We purchased ours at a lumber store in Picayune, Ms. but my guess is you can google it and find it in your area.
