Some people clad them with commercially made post covers that come in pseudo Greek & Roman stylings.
I’ve seen beautiful large stainless steel ones and they’re probably welded in place.,
Some people cover them with large PVC pipes, cut in half & then cemented back together, sanded, filled & painted. PVC is not UV stable & must be painted. I think also ABS pipe.
If they’re rectangular, not round, then furr them out with construction adhesive on the back of the wood. If the wood touches the ground, then it will need to be treated or have a treated lumber plinth base.
You could box them in with wood

Sharing an idea I'm considering for my own basement-level m-i-l apartment that has a metal support pole in it...I wonder if wrapping it with a product such as rope of some type might be a good option. A formal column would clash badly with my casual farm/country eclectic decorating. Furniture ranges from 1 year old to 120. I don't have the equipment to frame it in with wood and would like it to be somewhat soft. ? glue the edges on top as I wrap to prevent unraveling from getting bumped.
