How to prevent the black hole of lost items?

My son added a new raised deck and they constructed around a tree trunk. Any idea of how to prevent kids toys from falling into the gap around the trunk? Once in there they cannot be retrieved. Sorry I don't have a photo but it is about a 2-3 inch around the trunk.

Would it be possible to attach some sort of boards or something to the underside of the opening to "catch" any falling items? You would probably have to attach several small pieces around the edges of the opening in order to cover the entire space.

Just build a box. Put boards on top close to the tree. As the tree grows, adjust the top boards.

Put netting around the tree trunk below the level of the deck. Attach the other side to the deck a few inches from the opening edge. Make sure the netting you use is small enough that the smaller toys they play with will not go through the netting. This should solve the problem easily, and pretty cheaply and not look bad either, since it will be below the level of the deck.

Attach netting from underneath the hole and lightly cinched around the tree, making it adjustable if the tree grows in girth. Leaves, dirt and such will fall through, but balls, shoes, etc., won't. Thank you so much for saving a tree!

Fill the gap with a firmly squished in pool noodle to block the space but not affect the tree trunk'sgrowth.

take screening and roll it into the proper size to fill the hole(s) and long enough to go all the way around. Staple the screening to hold it in place.
