Depends on locale and what type of wood you are using. Carpenter ants are something to consider, as are termites. Bricks ice at 40 degrees, slipping is an issue in winter. Brick base and trim with concrete main surface?Helpful Reply -

Mara is right. If you are "of a certain age" you may want to stay with brick but put some non-slip rugs down. Any flooring surface will hurt if you fall but wood would be more forgiving. My first thought is that brick would stay cooler in the hot months, but that, and the possibility of icing, all depends on where you live.I had waxed brick and it never got hot and was so easy to sweep clean. Wood may rot and need replacement, but the weight of brick and earth settling may be an issue depending on your soil and region.Helpful Reply -

Both have their maintenance issues, to me wood is easier.... just paint every couple years and keep gutters/downspouts in good condition. Make sure the support beams don't touch the earth, use concrete blocks or sonatubes and metal brackets. Be sure to fill the end grain cut of the beams with either paint or I like marine epoxy so water doesn't wick up into the wood and rot.Helpful Reply -
