Have you ever spray painted chain link fence

Question

We have your typical chain link fence , my husband wants to replace it, but until then I have noticed that ones that are black are not as noticeable and don't look so unsightly.  So to test I bought a can of the outdoor wrought iron black and sprayed just a gate and it really does almost disappear in the landscape. So, now instead of buying  60 cans of paint. Need advice. First has anyone done this before, second  do they sell that kind of paint by the gallon and I have never used a paint sprayer. Any advice  appreciated

Betty, you're so right, chain link fences transform beautifully when painted.
However, spraying is a real waste of material and can create an unnecessary mess with alot of overspray.
So, simply roll on two coats of latex metal paint, acquired at your local paint store, for the best, long lasting finish.  It rolls on easily with little mess.  You will have to do a little brushing around the posts.

Painted one about 35 years ago - day before my wedding day.  Had on a plastic suit but forgot my hands and my hair fell into the paint.  Not a good idea on a windy day or the day before a wedding! :)  Fence looked great, though!

thanks charles. do you use a regular roller like for inside the house and a rolling pan. Just sounds a lot more time consuming than spraying.

I have done this in California years ago for the same reason of disliking an old chainlink fence.  I used a Rustoleum High Heat product and it lasted for 10 years, which is when we moved. I never had to repaint, because you never noticed the fence anymore.  One can goes a long way.  Don't spray on a windy day.  I don't think you'd need to go to the efforts of a sprayer because you would loose so much paint.  You have nothing to lose buying a few cans of black...much less costly than a new fence! :)  Good Luck.

Yes, Betty, a regular roller will put the paint on 10X thicker than the uber-thinned down version in the spray can, thus lasting 10X longer.  Plus, you won't be polluting yourself and the atmosphere!  
We spray many things, but chain linked fences are not one of them.
Anyway, the whole idea is a good one (-:

I recently put up a chain link fence around my home. It looks great and works very well to keep my 3 dogs in the yard. I like the fact I can see through the chain fence as opposed to a wood fence. We have painted our chain link fence several times.  Use a mitt that you wash your car with.  Dip it into the paint.  Use it as a paint brush.

I had no idea that you could use a paint glove to paint your chain link fence. I kind of agree, though, that unless you can't find the color it would be easier to install a fence that is already colored. It takes a lot of work to paint a fence and make it look good. http://www.bandbfencewi.net

Use a large nap roller 1”, touch up with small brush. Spray bottom of fence. Worked for me. Of course clean fence and sand rusty spots First.

I have spray painted my fence and all the posts as they were all rusty. I used Rustolium hunter green. All the neighbour thought we put in a new fence. Looks awesome. Buy one of the attachments for a couple of bucks, that give you a handle to hold onto and presses the button down on the can. I carried a board that was 2ft x 4ft to block any over spray to my neighbours. Took 2 days to do my fences on either side of our house.
