Consider concrete stain. You have to prep it first with an etching product to get the stain to penetrate through the concrete. This should hold up much better than paint.

Its a lot of work but it will give it a great new look! On the other hand, a rug is easier to change when you're in the mood.
I personally don't like paint, more specially paint that doesn't hold up to weather and traffic. Friend if mine used model car paint and painted designs in the corners. It was so cool it looked like someone sewed a design in the concrete with vivid colors
What about painting an area rug directly onto the concrete? My neighbor did just that and it looks fabulous! Now she isn't tripping over the rug that was there.
