Diane, aluminum requires special treatment. First wash and dry thoroughly. I use TSP to make sure there's no chalkiness. Then prime with ALUMINUM primer. You CANNOT use anything latex on aluminum. Over the aluminum primer you can use an oil based or an acrylic paint.
