Can a rectangular farmhouse table be converted into a drop leaf table?

I have a 36x60 rectangular farmhouse table that is too big for my little kitchen and I was wondering if it could be converted into a drop leaf table. If so, should the short side of the table be the drop leaf part or the long side?

If you have a table with four legs you would essentially be building an entirely new table using the wood from the existing table. A pedestal table may lend itself to cutting, depending on the structure under the table.

A better choice may be to find a Habitat for Humanity ReStore or a thrift shop. Find a table that is what you want and donate your old table. Most at my local ReStore are sold for less than $100.
