Can you paint or dye a leather couch?

You can, but I doubt you can go from black to a lighter color.

You can't dye something lighter than it currently is. And I am never a fan of painted upholstery. Add some light bright pillows to it or metallic ones, I made some black and silver damask pillows and some silver woven metallic ones for a friends black living room set. Looks great. Then we did some black and silver accents on the frames behind the sofa.
or you can make a silpcover for the sofa.

  Thank you. I'm so glad I didn't try! A slipcover doesn't stay, since the leather is smooth and too slippery. I guess I have to learn to like it, with pillows. You've been quite helpful!
