Chair in serious need of updating

Krista Beck
by Krista Beck
I have this chair that was given to me and it has been sittting in my entryway. I am in the process of painting my entryway and changing the artwork on the walls. I feel this chair is in serious need of some attention as well. The material is a like faux leather. I'm looking for ideas on what I can do with it. Thoughts? I'm open to all suggestions.

It looks as though it's in great shape. I'd personally just add a decorative lumbar pillow and maybe a small throw over the back to dress it up. Yes you could reupholster it, but if you chose a print fabric you'll more than likely grow tired of that too. Slipcovers would be a better idea as they're easily removed for washing. I'm sharing some saved pictures below that might help give you an idea of how it could look slip covered. None fit your chair exactly, but should help give you an idea of what it could look like. Another idea would be to stencil a pretty design on the front of the back to add interest.

Thank you! I didn't think of slip covers.

You're welcome @Krista. Can you sew?
  • Krista Beck Krista Beck on Mar 11, 2014
    Not a lick @Becky. LOL
    • Z Z on Mar 11, 2014
That's too bad @Krista. I love to sew. I just made Mommie and Me aprons for our daughter and granddaughter and I'm working on window panels for two rooms to take to Hawaii for our daughter's home. Most sewing for the home is straight lines. I still say just a pretty lumbar pillow and pretty throw could make a world of difference though.

Maybe this will help you if you would rather recover it. You don't need to sew either. The chair is very similar to yours. http://www.hometalk.com/diy/paint/furniture/one-armed-bandit-gets-a-makeover-3123094?all_comments=true

I have had excellent results spray painting faux leather. I did a couple of pieces for my granddaughter during her I-love-purple period, and painted one chair periwinkle and one violet--using the same paint for the frame and for the faux leather. They looked neat and wore well. The key is using a good quality spray paint.

try annie sloan chalk paint...there are several examples here on hometalk where people have done this. then you could possibly stencil something on it.

    Thank you ladies!!

How about the printed burlap fabric. It depends on what you are doing for design in your entry way but they have some very nice ones that can but used on anything. Whatever you decide please share. :)
  • Cathy Cathy on Mar 11, 2014
Stencil solid bold color and design on back only!
  • Lorna S Lorna S on Mar 11, 2014
Fast, easy, and quickest to change...spring throw folded over the back with a simple, color matched lumbar pillow. This is a super idea from Becky, above. You then have continuing options for every season and holiday, and won't get tired of the look!
  • Sharon F Sharon F on Mar 11, 2014
I agree with Becky. Another thing you could do is paint the chair a color you're using in the hallway. It would also add a pop of color & update the chair. That too can be changed if you tire of it. Good luck!

Do you have any more of that fabric? If so, you could button-tuft the back in a diamond -- it'd give it a lot more character without having to re-do the whole darn thing,
  • Donna Donna on Mar 12, 2014
Paint the whole chair. Fabric and all. I have done that and it turned out beautifully.
  • Terri R Terri R on Mar 12, 2014
You could add decorative thumb tacks to dress it up.
  • Raye B Raye B on Mar 12, 2014
    stencil
  • Rebecca W Rebecca W on Mar 12, 2014
I'm with painting and stenciling. Maybe white or antique white for the wood and a slightly bolder color for the cushions. Then tie it in with your artwork/ new paint using a stencil.

Pick a favorite color sharpie and draw pokadots, stars, etc or a monogram.paint the wood the same color in a glossy finish.Or,paint the wood in a metallic finish paint and paint stripes in the same metallic paint.

Transfer an image from graphic fairy on the back. I like the french images myself. It would add more character to the chair. You can also gently distress the arms then wax them. Nice chair.
  • Nora Q Nora Q on Mar 12, 2014
Paint the wood and add a pillow to match the decor, and add nail head trim to the chair.
  • Krista Beck Krista Beck on Mar 12, 2014
Thank you for all the great ideas!! I will let you know what I end up doing with it. :-)
  • Put a bright colored pillow or throw in it to get it a change unless you want to change the upholstery.
  • Sylvia Lopez-Ibarra Sylvia Lopez-Ibarra on Mar 12, 2014
I like the chervon look..Fabric of course.. Blk and white goes with everything and it would make that corner pop.NO flowers but leave the ficus
  • Sherry Wissel Sherry Wissel on Mar 12, 2014
I would just stencil a french design on the fabric you already have and paint the wood an antique distressed white
  • Reno Girl Reno Girl on Mar 12, 2014
Some antiqued studs along the front bottom edge and sides as well as the front of the back of the chair along the top edges following the form of the chair back rest. Sand the legs and arm rests to distress the wood along the edges to add character. You also could do a wash of some sort on the wood to antique it a little more.

Reupholstered in a bright or patterned fabric would be nice.
  • Debi Cotten Debi Cotten on Mar 12, 2014
I would paint the wood and re-upholster it in a bright pattern. Colors to match your décor.
  • Doris Kramer Doris Kramer on Mar 12, 2014
Strip the wood and restrain a lighter color. Upholster in a deep rich looking fabric with a pattern tha coordinates with your newly painted entry!
  • Aurora Rath Aurora Rath on Mar 12, 2014
Please enough with the Chevron pattern! Is everywhere and is annoying!!! Be original and make it your own..
  • Diana Haddad Diana Haddad on Mar 12, 2014
Lots of good ideas. My first reaction is the chair is just plain blah and needs color or design. I think I would try the stencil idea in a large area on the back and seat first since you have basically a blank canvas. Use that for awhile and if you tire of that then recover it.
  • Maria DiTondo Maria DiTondo on Mar 12, 2014
I'd recover or drape a throw in zebra or other animal print to brighten it up :-)
  • Cheryl Solt-Jones Cheryl Solt-Jones on Mar 12, 2014
Either recover or Monogram - or a combo of both would be an extremely classy way to upcycle the chair

I, too, love the monogram idea! Add a pillow for a pop of your choosen color and add a textural toss over one arm of the chair. You don't even need to paint the wood! Good luck. Post when completed.
  • Linda G Linda G on Mar 12, 2014
Don't paint it recover in a white on white brocade.
  • Corrinne Barrett Corrinne Barrett on Mar 12, 2014
Nice seasonal slip covers would be easy make with or without skirts,as the legs are already painted it wouldn't be hard to give them a coat in the colour you like every time you changed the covers.
  • Pam Miller Pam Miller on Mar 12, 2014
I like the idea of a monogram and either a throw or a small pillow in the color that compliments your new color pallette. It is a nice classic chair. If it was me I would simply recover with a tapestry fabric pulling out the colors I wanted to high light.....
  • Jackie Jackie on Mar 12, 2014
reupholster in pastel floral and distress off white paint on wood or paint wood in gold distress with bright color upholstery and throw pillow.
  • Jackie I Jackie I on Mar 12, 2014
I would lighten the wood color and find some nice bold fabric. Something that would make you smile when you saw it. Also consider some metal embellishment. Maybe some nice nail head trim?
  • Sherry Poucher Melton Sherry Poucher Melton on Mar 12, 2014
You could paint the fabric with upulstery paint and then stencil a design to match your new look

    One idea. See below

I love the structure of the chair. I do agree it that it is plain and in need of some pizazz. What colors are you planning on changing the area to? Maybe a nice print or a little leopard print.
  • Valeria Blackburn Valeria Blackburn on Mar 13, 2014
    Maybe something like this:

Check out fabric painting on HomeTalk. Some people have done wonders with fabric and furniture. You may ask them if their method can be used for faux leather. If you just decide to recover the seat, the color needs to complimnt the walls. Good luck and post pictures when done.
  • Theresa Hughes Theresa Hughes on Mar 13, 2014
You could reupholster it with fabric to match your redecorating or you could reupholster it in white fabric and then embroider something you like on it or sew on a cross stich design or you could leave the leather upholster in it and do an iron on transfer of a design in a color scheme you like to match your new decorating scheme or make it stand out as your focal point to the room
  • Theresa Hughes Theresa Hughes on Mar 13, 2014
One more suggestion you could dye the leather a color of your choosing to fit your decorating color scheme and then either leave plain or follow suggestions i gave above or others suggestions

@Jean S So modern looking but still has its original fashionable look. LOVE your fabric. And who would have thought white would have dressed it up so.
  • Carol Carol on Mar 13, 2014
This looks like an easy reupholster. Taking off the existing fabric and using it as a pattern makes the job even easier. I would paint the wood and put some fun fabric on it and add a lumbar pillow with some pizzazz..
  • Cheryl Cheryl on Mar 13, 2014
Sand off dark wood finish. Maybe whitewash the wood or use light chalk paint and rub off.
  • Cori Warner Cori Warner on Mar 13, 2014
I've seen several posts lately where the upholstery in painted using chalk paint. I don't know how durable it might be, but it sounds like your fabric might be paintable. I would whitewash the wood to bring out the details.
  • Jean S Jean S on Mar 15, 2014
Thank you Janice. It is very kind of you to take the time to tell me you like my work! I bought the fabric before I knew I was re-doing the chair, loved it and was thinking it would come in handy at some point. It was a remnant and I paid a grand total of $4.
