Apply a quality white or light gray primer according to the manufacturer's directions, and let it dry completely. Use a primer that is compatible with the underlying stain formulation, and follow that with a topcoat paint that is compatible with the primer. Use oil-based undercoats with oil-based primers and oil-based topcoats, and use water-based primers and topcoats with a water-based undercoat. If the undercoat is shellac or other alcohol-based product or if the underlying stain is of unknown composition, use a specialty primer formulated to transition between incompatible undercoats and topcoats. In any case, you may need more than one coat to provide adequate coverage.
Hi Tammy, you could start by sanding your tables lightly to get some "tooth" so the white paint will adhere well. Paint white, to give a distressed look you can sand certain areas of the piece to make it have the distressed look. You could also use darker paint of your choice and apply with a brush to make a streaky wood finish look if you like that.look. Here's some additional information for you. Hope this helps!

I would sand it first and use a white paint with primer inside the paint.
Chalk paint works great for distressing.
Hi,
You could also strip and use a white wax...........
After cleaning and de glossing if needed, prime. Then you are ready to paint.

Chalk paint all the way! No prep needed and goes on so fast and smooth. It dries quickly, spreads far and usually only needs two coats. Then scuff the edges with sandpaper and the dark wood shows thru. Quick and easy.
