How can I paint over a wood stained bed?

Lightly sand to remove any shine. Prime with Kilz primer. Paint your color. Seal with three coats of a water based polyurethane.

Hi Lynn, you could certainly sand down the stain and start from scratch, or I've painted over stain with chalk paint. Good luck!
