How do you finish a piece that has both chalk paint and decoupage?

Frustrated!!! I am a beginner and trying to figure out how to seal/ finish the back of a chair that has decoupage on front and chalk paint on back. I applied the mod podge on top of the decoupage to seal it but got little on the sides which was visible on the chalk paint after it dried. Then I tried to wax the back but the wax got on the decoupage on the front accidentally and it seeped through the edge creating an oil like stain. Ugh so frustrated !!! I would greatly appreciate any advice to get a more refined look.

Well you were doing everything right except for the Mod Podge accident and wax accident.  You could sand off the decoupaged  area and redo it if it really is noticeable. But perhaps you could give it an aged look by applying the wax in more areas but with a small brush.  As to the Mod Podge on the painted area, you might be able to get it off with just rubbing with, believe it or not, a paper bag. If that doesn't work, you want to go to a 600 grit sand pad. Diana has the right tip.  I would of brushed a small amount of kiltz on because of the oil type stain...

If it was me I would prime the entire chair with 300xim primer (let dry overnight) then paint with chalk paint.  Once dry  wax to seal. If you'd like the decoupage to show, I would dry brush the front with chalk paint and prime and paint the back. Then wax the entire piece.

Wax shouldn't hurt anything on modge podge wipe it off.  I use modge podge or water base poly to seal my stuff.

Hello there, sorry to use your question for my own but I can’t find anything on the net that can help me... I’m busy decoupaging a glass plate that has a ripple effect in the glass. I’m a newbie to this and found it super tricky! Some of the paper ripped and I’d like to paint a layer of chalk paint behind it so the rips are not noticeable. Can I use chalk paint in between two layers of modge podge and then seal it with varnish?

Use polycrylic for both. It's water based and won't yellow with time. Wax isn't necessary for chalk paint. I hardly ever use it to seal furniture.
