If you just want to brighten them up, you can give them a couple coats of chalk paint. It's a really easy brand of paint that doesn't require any sanding or priming. Just make sure to apply a good wax finish to protect it.
If you don't want to paint, try Murphy's Oil Soap or an Orange Oil cleaner.
I USE MURPHEY'S OIL SOAP AND IT DOES A GREAT JOB
