How do I refinish a wood lateral file cabinet?

Question

I got this lateral file for a really good deal. It doesn’t look terrible the way it is but I would like to refinish it.  I have read so much conflicting information on the internet I have no idea what I should actually do.  It has some minor scratche. There is a place where someone left a drink or something on it.  Other than that the finish is just worn on the edges and I’m places on the top.

Lightly sand, clean ,restain or paint and seal with a non-yellowing polycrylic

If you want to keep the wood look, then Janet's advice is great. There are also some neat wood finishing products from Rustoleum that can add a little change to to the look: https://www.rustoleum.com/product-catalog/consumer-brands/varathane

. Thanks! This is pretty much what common sense had me thinking. A friend told me it was going to be so much work it wouldn't be worth it. And the internet can give you some ridiculous results to anything so I thought it best to get an answer from this community of people actually doing things like this. Brown paper on top of ring and then apply an Iron. The heat should help remove the ring. Lightly sand top with the grain, so as not to do further damage. Use Mayonnaise to bring back the lustre.
