How should I update my builder grade honey oak cabinets?

I have the mid nineties builder grade honey oak cabinets that so many people are painting these days. My husband loves the idea of me updating them, but he has two requests: he wants to still see the wood grain & he wants to go light (beige, gray, cream...) I have used GF gel oil stain & love it, but they do not have any colors that fit the bill. What would you suggest?

I would research the possibility of customizing your choice. If you have a reputable paint store I would inquire about this. I know Min Wax has offered custom colors.

Clean them really well and install new hardware, You might also consider painting either the upper or lowers a different color.

@Sherrie Frantz my husband wants to still see the wood grain. Won't painting them cover the wood grain?

Maybe go for a Limed Oak look!

How about a white wash with the color of your choice, dilute the paint and the grain will show through, practice in an unnoticeable section first-like the back of a drawer. Find the right dilution you like and make enough of it to do your entire project.

  • Dixie Belle paints now makes a wonderful water based gel stain that is so easy to work with in tons of colors. You can put it on heavy or light, lots of looks.
