How do I paint pressboard cabinets?

I live in a small condo so there isn’t much room for diy projects. I want to paint the original, builder’s grade, pressboard kitchen cabinets. There is some kind of sealer (laminate?) finish on them. Without a lot of fanfare how can I paint them?

If you are looking to repaint - I recently discovered Oil Bond (you can get it here on Amazon where you rub this first on your cabinets. This helps the paint stick so you DON'T NEED TO SAND!! Sounds like with the sealer on your laminate cabinets, this will work! Also add a bit of Oil Bond to your paint. I would also spend a bit more for specific cabinet paint to ensure a smooth finish. I recently did this on my bathroom vanity and it turned out fantastic! Here are my pics of my project:

I would clean them thoroughly. Then very lightly rough up the finish if possible. Use a gripping primer. I like oil based Kilz for cabinets. Then paint with a high quality paint. I love Benjamin Moore Advance alkyd. use a small foam roller where possible to minimize brush marks. Our cabinets were a wood veneer, but lots of people paint laminate cabinets with success!

Hi Pauley Girl, I would clean them thoroughly to give you a good key, then I use a Ginssers 3 2 1 Primer this will cover the existing finish, this primer is fast drying, allowing you to use the paint off your choice. You can use a small roller If it is easier than a brush? Good luck and Happy New Year.
