I want to re-do my mid century modern dresser

I have a beautiful old 3-drawer dresser that has some minor stains on the top (water rings). I have an idea to re-finish the drawer faces the same finish (teak look) but paint the outside shell black. I don't know where to start! What grit do I use to re-finish and what kind of paint for an opaque black?
The dresser surround (disaster in my basement)
I have new black rustic handles to put on

Oh my gosh you have a treasure. DO not paint it with any paint. There are so many products on the market which can be used to clean or refinish this piece just please please do not ruin the beauty and value of this piece. It is a true mid century modern piece. Throw those black rustic handles away.

Although the thought of painting your gorgeous dresser pains me, it is YOURS and YOU get to decide what you want to do with it. Both those links will help you out since they have done what you want to do. I would love to see what your final result is! Go big or go home, right?

I would sand off the finish on the body, wipe with tack cloth and then put one or two coats of Minwax Gel Stain in Black on it. Then I would lightly sand the finish on drawer fronts and give it a top coat. If that second drawer in the picture needs it, I would stain it to make the stain even before top coating.
