Need tips for a "dog cave".....

Just found this at a garage sale and want to remove door, paint/stain, add "curtains" and a hand sewn dog bed....my living room colors are red, white & blue (Texas). What would you do to make this the perfect doggie get-away??? (Dog shown may have to curl up to fit!)

Is this going to be in your living room? If not, I'd leave the door on and open and secure it so it doesn't move. Then you can mount the dogs food and water dishes onto the door. If it stays in the living room, You could drill holes in the sides, the shape of Texas or the shape of the star , sew your cushion and put a cushion on top as well. The holes would give a little air flow through the space for the dog.... or drill holes about the size of marbles and push the marbles into the holes.

Great idea! I'd remove the door and it's hardware, paint the whole thing whatever color you choose, paint a great pattern on the top, add a piece of foam inside and perhaps cut out a window on each side. If you could find a nice piece of tile with a filigree pattern you could put it in where the window is or maybe even a piece of metal from a thrift store piece. let us see it when it's done!

@Amy What a great rustic piece to go with your Texas theme! I would sand it down & re-stain it using a variety of stains to make a Texas Star on the top, then do a cushion in a color or theme to match the rest of your décor. Here's a Tx. Star stained on concrete but something similar could be done on the wood top!

The problem is going to be with getting the dog inside. Dogs do not like to be cramped any more than people do. I think it is too small for the dog in the picture. This idea would be great if you have a small dog like a dachshund or chihuahua.

@Maria Johnson Actually I got this for a smaller dog who loves to get in enclosed spaces; I think it makes her feels like she is in her wolf den...

I always keep my dogs in Kennels at night.. I feel more secure knowing that they are safe and they love their bed... also consider making a hole on each side for ventilation if you are planning on keeping a dog in it with the dog closed...and I do love the Texas star...all the right colors, hope you will share pic when it's done,
