What is the best way to refinish an old dresser that has been painted?

    I have done this and it takes time and elbow grease but it's worth it. I used a green stripping product (sorry, I don't remember the exact name but I think "orange" was in it.) I had to put that product on it, scrape and then sand. My dresser had a lot of decorations on it, so it took a lot of time. Once all the paint was off, I wiped it down, stained and put a clear coat over it. It's beautiful.

  • If you're looking to start from scratch, the best thing to do is strip the paint. If you're looking for a light redo, you can do some minimal sanding and paint over it. There are lots of paint techniques you can use over existing paint.
