Distressed?

If everyone had the same taste they would not make hundreds of styles of houses, clothes, cars, people and on and on. Many people may not like your choices of paint. Many don't like paint at all.

That's the beauty of home decor - you can do what you like in your own home - and not do what you don't like!

Hi Jan lol I kind of agree with you. The look of distressed furniture for me has run its course but there will probably always be a niche out there for it. For me its a way for people to get "antique looking" pieces without the cost that generally comes with them.

It's a personal preference. Keep in mind, trends come and go!

I'm right there with you, Jan. When I see a distressed piece, I automatically think diy!

Some of it is well done, some not. As always, each individual likes what they like and I know many people love the distressed look. Knotty pine is my pet peeve, but others love the look.

No you are not the only one. I grew up dirt poor and we had old used furniture and I can't understand why anyone would want that look. To me distressed looks like something someone found along the roadside. Lived with that for almost 20 years and don't care to do it again.

Some folks call distressed as adding character. I call it old furniture in need of a face lift.

Hello. You’re not alone. So many bloggers want those white colorless rooms and farmhouse style. Everyone’s taste can certainly differ.

It is another fad, just like everyone had to do a pallet project.

Love modern farmhouse but hate distressed or worn looking items. Odd maybe that it is what it is.

I am not crazy about it and my husband hates it so I never distress anything. He says it looks like it needs painting so he's exactly with your opinion. But I do have quite a bit of furniture I have painted so I'm not opposed to that.

I think it ties in with the rustic/ farmhouse trend. I like things that are naturally worn, but I don't love the overly chippy and distressed look. It needs to be neat looking, for me, anyway!

No, you are not alone! It is usually the younger generation that likes this look!

It’s all a matter of what makes you enjoy looking at your surroundings. I started distressing my own furniture because with every move, my furniture got knicked and scratched pretty badly. Now when this happens, it adds more character to my pieces. I distress furniture on purpose now. If you up-cycle stuff with lots of previous cosmetic damage, you can work with what you’ve got by going with the old/ worn look. I still like the worn out look because It reminds me of the past when life was void of technology and mass production. People were resourceful and practical. It was a period when people were keeping stuff until it literally fell apart. Then after it did, the broken pieces were then used to make into something else. “Barn wood”, old fruit crates, etc. Folks were used to reusing and not wasting or throwing out items, especially when times were tough. It’s the ultimate way of bringing that part of history into your home if you are into that. Of course, to each his own.

My daughter is a huge fan but I'm just the opposite. She goes full blown with crackle paint. distressed corners and darkened (dirty build up) recess look. I have bought furniture from her just so I could paint it. Did I mention I have OCD? Distressed work looks unfinished to me.

As someone who has has experience with a 'real' farmhouse (read: weather beaten, worn out, unpainted) I have a hard time understanding the appeal of this trend to decorate in what is being labelled as 'farmhouse' style.

I sometimes think that the folks who find it attractive have never experienced the the genuine distress in having to live every day in a house that you are unable to fix up due to lack of money.
