Hi Fern, they make an inexpensive spray glue that I've purchased online and in craft stores that works great for things like that! I believe elmers makes it.
Depending upon the surface you're placing the stencils, 'Stencil Ease' makes a good spray, especially when it comes to needing to reuse the stencils. I found it on amazon, but I'm sure it's also available at Walmart and/or Target as well as craft stores.

Easy Tack Re-positional adhesive works wonderfully!
There several good re-positional adhesives on the market for stencils. I've used several different brands, they all seem to work fine.
