How do I fix this?

What is causing this paint to crinkle like this? I cleaned and washed and painted 18 of these and this is only one that did this. Used same paint - Krylon for plastics. Any help please! Thanks in advance.

Possibly not cleaned properly or something got on it after cleaning. Too much paint at one time. Or previous layers not dry enough for the next layer. Sand, wipe with alcohol or mineral spirits. Several light coats allowing each coat to fully dry.

Hi Donna, here are some of the reasons this happens and how to fix it.

    What Causes Paint Wrinkling?

    • The paint layer is too heavy
    • Applying paint on a dirty surface
    • Applying paint on a hot surface
    • Applying paint under very hot or cold conditions
    • Exposing uncured paint to water or high humidity
    • Not allowing undercoats to dry properly
    • Painting over a glossy surface that has not been sanded

    How to Remedy Paint Wrinkles

    1. First, allow the paint to dry thoroughly
    2. Remove wrinkles by scraping or rough sanding
    3. Sand the surface smooth
    4. Wipe the affected area with a damp cloth, making sure the surface is clean
    5. If needed, prime bare areas with the appropriate primer, allowing it to dry completely
    6. Reapply the paint, following the manufacturer's instructions

you could also go to kyrlon's website and get more info since that is the brand paint you used. Good luck

Painting plastic is tricky! You have a short window to apply a second coat or you have to wait a week to apply one. If that was the last one done with the first coat and the first for the second coat, it might have been too soon. Humidity can also affect it.

    Hi Donna,

Rebecca summed it up really well, you could also call the Krylon customer service hotline located on the can.

Others have offered good advice, but all I have to offer is empathy. It amazes (irritates) me that you can the same process and product, yet come up with problem on one aspect. Usually discovered by someone else, who says "what happened here?"

What John said! Amazing you can do the exact same process and have different results. Just be kind to yourself! Guess that is the FUN of diy!

Looks like you tried to cover the item in one coat. Try using light coats, maybe it still has whatever cleaner you used on it. Rinse well let dry and try again.

If all else fails, antique it. Pretend you meant all along to have this big wrinkle and spray on a contrasting color. Wipe gently over the wrinkles to expose them again.
