Alice, here are some tips for choosing paint colors to make your room appear larger. I think lighter colors make rooms appear larger and also choosing paint colors that reflect the light coming into the room rather than absorbing the light.

Hello Alice,
I would say lighter, but it all depends on the room itself. Which do you want to lighten the eg@ the chimney breast or the walls to the side. Remember the wall the window is on is always the darkest wall.
I have 2 BIG windows, 1 on the south & the other on the north, which make my room super bright & lots of shadows. Would this have any baring on the color or the feature wall which is on the west. Iโm really stumped!
I would do the feature wall darker grey. The color will pull attention to it and accent pieces would really pop!
Darker would be my recommendation.
Really depends on room, lighting, what walls are made of and how tall ceilings are, where the wall is in the room,type/look/placement of furniture in room. Lighter makes it appear larger more light reflection, darker absorbs more light making it smaller ;Try painting yourwall trim and moldings in a lighter color than yourwalls. By doing so, the walls will appear farther back, making your living room seem bigger. here is additional info. because every situation is different https://www.apartmenttherapy.com/ways-to-make-a-small-space-feel-bigger-paint-one-wall-dark-243124 more info. https://www.bustle.com/articles/163905-how-to-paint-your-walls-to-make-any-space-look-bigger more https://freshome.com/visual-weight-101/
