Hi Kay, you can use clear polyurethane after the paint, glaze or varnish has cured completely. I prefer water-based polyurethane. It doesn't yellow over time but both oil- and water-based ones can be brushed on without too much hassle. The key is to use a good paint and sealer. Here's a link:

Try Eggshell or Satin Paint or even Gloss paint.
The glossier the paint the more durable it is. Do a good prep job, use quality paint, if you'd like a sealer, use a water-based one so it will not yellow over time.
A couple of coats of clear seaer will help to protect your painted finish from scratches. Water-based sealer is my go to as it doesn't yellow over time.
Use crystal clear poly as a top coat. Regular paint on poly continues to yellow with age.
Sherwin-Williams Emerald Urethane Trim Enamel provides exceptional washability, durability, and stain and scratch resistance. In fact, most stains wipe clean with water or mild soap. It also has advanced stain-blocking technology to seal in stains
My go to is RustOleum Enamel paint. It is very durable and it has withstood quite a bit of abuse, including my husband using our bathroom door frame as a scratching post for his back.
Use a good top coat. General Finishes makes a really good coat that resists scratches
The top coat should be a sealer; if you ask at your local hardware store, they'll be able to point you to the right one. Let them know the type of paint you used and the need for something super durable.
Ya no can do .I donโt think you can.
You'll need a durable top coat sealer but know that nothing will protect them entirely, sadly, unfortunately. I used a kit by Rust-Oleum called Cabinet Transformations to paint my cabinets and it's held up really well. You can see how I did it here: https://www.flippingtheflip.com/2015/09/kitchen-cabinets-black.html
Hi Kay, hope this helps you out,
Sherwin Williams Pro Classic. We have painted so many pieces of wood furniture with this paint, and not only does it provide a flawless finish, but it doesn't chip. It has a hard, beautiful sheen.
