How do I whitewash my dining room table and chairs?

Can you explain the best way to get started. Wood is oak with cane back chairs.

We sanded down to the bare wood then did one part paint to two parts water. Then poly.

Clean with TSP than sand off sheen. Thin your white oil based paint with paint thinner, brush on, wipe off. If don't like how thick it is or thin, just wash off with paint thinner before it sets. Oil based paint sticks better to finished wood furniture, latex chips easier. When finished add a ciate of oil based poly.
