Can I pain these cabinets?

The doors are not wood, they are actually wood-grained contact paper. The bases and the cabinets themselves are more like paneling. I can't afford to replace them, there's a LOT!

How about using chalk paint for this?

I've never used it, but have seen it, of course. Thanks for the idea!

I would not paint contact paper. You can remove that and see what material it is covering. Paneling you can lightly sand and paint.

I am unable to see a photo, but I would recommend that you use a good primer first. Someone in the paint department of a home improvement store can advise you. After priming, I would use a semigloss paint, because it is durable and easy to wipe clean. Your paint guy can also recommend.

Have you thought about putting new contact paper over the old? Economical and they now come in a ton of patterns and colors
