First make sure it is super clean and fill in any holes or cracks before you start. Use a good primer and look for paint designed for floors. Ask at your paint center what is the best product they carry in their store to use. Here are a few ideas:
Hi Kathy! Make sure the linoleum is in good condition before painting it. I'm giving you a link for repairs. Once any damaged areas are repaired, you want the floor spotless even if you have to scrub it. When I painted a floor, first I applied Kilz sealer. Then after it is good and dry (I waited until the next day), I painted my base color using floor paint. Then after two coats of that, you want to let it dry well, and then paint your design in a different color. I used dark gray for the base and then a lighter gray for the stencil. Then a durable clear sealer made for floors. I like satin so it isn't too glossy. I apply several coats depending on the room. Here's the link I promised:

This floor has been touched up in the traffic pattern. But the room it adjoins which is painted the same way, was painted in the mid '80's and has not been touched up. All my painted floors have been scrubbed clean. No sealer, one coat. The floors in left bottom are the hall and a bedroom. The bedroom was the first floor I ever painted and I did give that a poly coat as I was told to. Very sorry I did as it yellowed the white border. That was the last time I did that. Bottom right pic is of the d.r. floor which has not been touched up in over 30 years. Use a good deck/floor paint. Do not give a top coat. It is far easier to touch up the color if you ever need to.
