How to repaint a cast iron planter pot?

I have 2 very large cast iron planters. Over the years the paint has chipped and looks bad. I would like to repaint them. I am not sure if they need to be stripped or can I just brush away the chipped paint? Is there something better than paint for cast iron?

I happen to have the same question but my set is for little bums to sit on while they have their tea parties...I have used the steel brush on them but I need assistance to go any further please. I was thinking I would need to strip off the remaining paint. Have a lovely Sunday full of sunshine.
Use a wire brush to remove as much of the peeling paint. Use a good primer. Rust-Oleum sells a rust restorer.reformer that is a spray. I would apply two coats. Then buy a good quality outdoor enamel paint.
I also go with the scraping on a wire brush and then Rust-Oleum spray paint
I would get off any loose paint or dirt. Scrub with a brush if you can! Then spray paint, a couple of thin coats to prevent drips. Good luck!
