HelloElizabeth266, First, clean the headstone with a wire brush and water. Make sure it is dry and then start with a thin layer of paint. You should use oil based paint. I would choose black since the original letters were probably black to begin with. Use a small paint brush. Allow a day to dry then apply another thin layer of paint. Hope this helps you. I'm sorry for your loss.

What I would do would be to contact a local headstone company and ask their advice. I would also clean it with love and use the time to make a spiritual connection to the deceased. Listen, they make talk to you.

First, check your local cemetery board. Some have very strict rules about the care of headstones/tombstones/markers, etc. including restrictions on the use of wire brushes. If allowed, they may have suggestions on what works best. As a genealogist, I've been in many graveyards and have seen poorly done applications which just make the headstone look tacky.
