I find the best way to deal with my clutter as boxes. It helps to decorate them, make them fun, give them labels. And then everything has a place.

Start getting rid of the stuff that you haven't used in a year, other than the things like holiday decorations that will be used each year and specialty stuff and family heirlooms. Start in one corner of a room and make three piles, one that goes, one that stays in that room and one for the it is suppose to be in another room. Take care of the piles and the room is done.

Please, please read, "The Joy of Tidying Up." (About $10 on Amazon-or any book store.)I read the whole thing in about 4 hours. I am very organized and it motivated me to go clean over 22 large garbage bags of stuff out of my closet--and that was an organized closet before I read the book. Don't go buy a bunch of organizational items until you change you views on your clutter. This book is like sitting down with the author, Marie Kondo, and having a chat where she guides you. She covers every aspect of stuff: papers, clothes, books, how to fold clothing in your drawers. I have been fascinated with organization for 40 years and have never read a better book.

I would pull everything out of the space and go through it. Decide if you need it, it's garbage or you can donate it. Then depending on what you are organizing, use boxes, totes, folders, etc to put everything back together. You can get some cheap organizing buckets, pails, etc at the dollar store and if they don't match, you can always spray paint them.
