My water heater is approaching three years old. Realistically, do I need to have it flushed? I hear various stories about this so I am looking for facts.

Yes, a hot topic of debate. I have less than ideal water so I do bleed mine occasionally. I used to drain into a bucket to check the sediment, now I know how much to bleed out to keep all the crud from settling in the tank. I just run a hose to the lawn so the water does not get wasted.

Two different plumbers have told me never to flush the water heater. Unfortunately, I don't remember the reasons they gave.
no you don't have to flush it, but it will help it last longer. Rust and materials gather in the bottom so best to clean it so the rust doesn't destroy the metal bottom and you find a surprise on the floor one day:)

From what I've been told, yes, you do need to flush it. Once per year, and usually, if you have a professional do it, they will check other things to make sure everything in functioning well.

My plumber told me not to drain or flush any water from the water heater....but al the water taps hold softened water,,,little to no lime scale build up.its an ancient beast.
I just attach a hose to the tap at the bottom of the tank and let it run into the drain for a few minutes until the sediment in the base is gone and the water runs clear. You really do not have to drain the whole tank.
