Are there any tips or cheats to skim a wall?

I have an old house. I've just taken all the old wallpaper of and found loads of cracks in the walls. I want to paint rather than paper again so I need smooth walls. Don't have extra money to pay someone to do it.

Lets put this this way If you cheat out on repairing the walls before painting them, you will have an uneven wall which will stand out more when painted.My suggestion is to fix the walls with spackle sand and then paint.

Skimming is pretty intensive. I have done this job in an older house and thinking of it now, I would drywall over the walls instead.

I,m one old biddy on a fixed income so...get a 5 gal. bucket -1 gal of drywall putty(Walmart) to 2 gal of paint-I use paint mixer I attach to my drill-mix WELL & roll on woman !!

We just renovated a house from 1967 which had the same issues throughout the house. Joint compound works great and then you can and it smooth or use a damp sponge to match your wall pattern if needed. Then paint afterward. Make sure to put a good coat of primer up before you paint so you will really get a uniformed paint. I know there are many paint/primer in ones out there but when going over this type of thing we have always found using primer first helped more. BTW the house looked so good it was used in a television episode and then sold for full asking price! Good luck!

No cheating - do it right. I had to skim coat our entire bathroom after a former resident painted over partially removed wallpaper - leaving being scraps of wallpaper and TONS of glue under the paint. It looked horrendous. It takes a while but it is a relatively simple process. Skim on, scrape off, sand, tack and paint.

I ran into this same problem when I removed wallpaper from half bath. They make a wallpaper that covers walls with imperfections, and I used it. It was perfect, and painted, looks great!

Or buy Luan, $15 per 4X8 sheets, glue, air nail, prime and paint. Depending on size of wall/room, done in 1 to 2 days!!!

I don't know how this works, but when I was a child my mother and Aunt used to do it in all of our rooms (old cold miners "patch" house....all the walls were unsmooth and crooked). She used to take an old sheet and cut the thicker ends or seams off of it and soak it in thinner wallpaper glue and then smooth it over the walls. After drying she would paint. A sheet can sometimes cover an entire wall depending on room/sheet size so you should see no seams.

This was done at our house after taken down wallpaper sand, sand, than use thin coats of joint compound until the crack s are filled than sand smooth vacumn the dust and use a damp wet rag to make sure all the dust is gone than your're ready for paint. A lot of work but done right.
