How big is the hole? A photo would help.
Take a paint stir, put hot glue on both ends or you can screw it up. Put it evenly a cross the opening let the glue dry it's easier to fix it if you take your whole from being round to square so you can use either a ruler or another paint stir as your guide to make your hole into a square. Measure the size Square then fit it into the opening hold it up and you're going to screw it into the paint stir you only need two screws depend upon the size of the hole make sure you set your screws so there able to be covered with the mud when you mud it. Tape it. mud it. sand it. paint it. You're done.
