You can use drywall compound to repair Plaster. Get a wide drywall putty knife and apply the initial coat. Let dry, sand lightly, apply a second coat. This combination should fill the void. Then do a skim coat which should blend in with your existing surface. The skim coat should be smooth as possible. Very lightly sand edges once dry. This will now take paint. It will soak up the paint like crazy, though, so primer the drywall compound before painting

My mom's house has highly sculptured textured plaster - I suck at trying to fix it properly, flat plaster I can do but not the textured swirly stuff - so I have a guy to call. Not cheap, but worth it. If your walls are flat, you can easily do yourself.
