How do I find a better solution for a turn knob?

I’m replacing an old leviton adjustable height lamp socket. My problem is i can’t find which turn turn knob screw doesn’t extend too far out, so the sleeve will slide over it. I cut this sleeve but would like a better solution. Any suggestions?
Many of the older Leviton candelabra styles were keyless(knobless) they were plugged into wall socket that was turned on by switch on wall did it have a key on it? so sleeves just slid over them easily. Did you get correct replacement? Just cut a thin slot in sleeve so it can slide over.....
If you don't mind replacing the entire socket you could get rid of the screw by using a standard socket and then putting an in-line dimmer on the cord or adding a dimmer switch between the plug and the socket. Personally, I think the dimmer cord between the plug and sockets really only works if it is hidden by furniture otherwise you get too many cords showing. If you don't feel comfortable with changing out the socket or adding another cord, then I think you have already found your best solution.
Depending on the length of the screw for the key you might be able to cut from the inside by using a hacksaw blade. If that doesn't work then perhaps covering the "candle" with an attractive fabric or paper.
Needle nose, hold the threaded part and turn the knob.
Take the screw out and replace your switch with a switch that you place on the actual cord. I don't remember what it is called but it is available in any hardware store and is easy to install. I use them all the time to make it easier to turn a lamp on/off.
