You have to pry it away from the wall first to look behind it for the way it is put into the wall, here is a guide:

Since there are no "visible" supports, two other ways by which the mantle may be attached come to mind. First, there may be hooks mounted in the brick. Try pushing the mantle up flat against the surface or you may even have to use a block of wood under the edge and hammer the block beneath and up, flat against where the mantle meets the brick surface. Use a scrap of two by four if you have it. Have a helper hold the mantle as it could break free and hurt you or be damaged if it falls to the floor. Second way is glue. In this less likely scenario, you'll be forced to pry the mantle off. Good luck in either case.
